Same diet, same deficit, different sleep

Researchers led by Arlet Nedeltcheva put 10 overweight adults through two 14-day periods of matched caloric restriction — once while sleeping 8.5 hours a night, once while sleeping only 5.5 hours. Calories and macronutrients were controlled in both conditions, so sleep was the only variable that changed.

The results split sharply. With 8.5 hours of sleep, participants lost 1.4 kg of fat. With 5.5 hours, they lost only 0.6 kg — a 55% smaller share of the loss coming from fat. Fat-free mass told the opposite story: 1.5 kg lost with adequate sleep versus 2.4 kg lost with short sleep, a 60% increase in muscle loss.

This was a small crossover trial — 10 people, two weeks per condition. The magnitude and timeline shouldn't be generalized to everyone dieting, but the direction of the effect, measured under controlled conditions, is hard to dismiss.

Why the body burns muscle instead of fat

Notably, cortisol, growth hormone, thyroid hormones, and leptin's independent effect showed no significant differences between conditions, so this isn't a story about every hormone changing at once.
