A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in Nutrients asked a simple question: does it matter whether you eat your protein before or after training, as long as the total amount stays the same? The researchers, Casuso and Goossens, could find only five studies rigorous enough to isolate timing from total dose. What the researchers actually compared

Out of 3,311 records screened, only five trials met the strict design needed to test timing on its own: subjects had to be randomized to protein before versus after training, with total protein intake held equal, for at least four weeks. That small pool is itself a finding. Despite protein timing being a popular topic in fitness content, very few studies have actually isolated it from total protein dose.

Given that small sample, the authors rated the certainty of evidence for lean mass and strength outcomes as low to very low. That means the leg-press result below could look different with more or larger trials. It is a signal worth noting, not a settled fact.

Lean mass, strength, and fat mass: the numbers

For lean body mass, timing showed no meaningful effect (SMD: -0.08; 95% CI: -0.398 to 0.244; p = 0.641). Whether protein came before or after the workout, muscle gained over the study period was statistically indistinguishable.

Strength told a similar story for the chest press (SMD: 0.07; 95% CI: -0.248 to 0.395; p = 0.653) — no effect of timing. For the leg press, pre-workout protein edged out post-workout protein on one-rep max, though the formal comparison between the two exercises didn't reach significance (p = 0.07). Fat mass changes showed the same pattern as lean mass: timing didn't move the needle.
