Two diets, one direction

Researchers split 30 resistance-trained participants into three groups: an isocaloric diet, a moderate energy deficit of about -250 kcal per day with 2.5 g/kg of protein, and an untrained control. Everyone in the two active groups followed the same resistance program, four days a week, for 10 weeks. Body composition was measured with DXA, the imaging standard for separating fat mass from lean mass.

The deficit group lost more fat than the isocaloric group, -2.94 kg versus -1.41 kg, while also gaining slightly more lean mass, +1.04 kg versus +0.97 kg after statistical correction. Both groups gained muscle. Only one of them was also in a calorie deficit. That alone is the headline: cutting calories didn't cost either group muscle, and it didn't stop fat loss from happening alongside it.

What the numbers challenge

The effect sizes for lean-mass gain were nearly identical between the two diet groups, even though the deficit group lost twice as much fat. If body composition worked purely on the simple energy-in, energy-out model, a bigger deficit should have made muscle gain harder, not equal. The authors state plainly that these results challenge that traditional framing.

What seemed to matter more than the size of the deficit was the combination of high protein intake and resistance training.
